When
a film is finished is that it? Over with? Done? Nope,
that's just the beginning. The Wake took us two
years to bring to the screen so now it's time to bring
it - to screens. The Wake is on tour and this
page will chart its progress as the public get to sample
the delights of life, death and root canals.

Sorry
for the burry photos, still getting used to my new little
digital camera. EHP are back at the Portobello Film Festival,
about three years ago we screened Paradox at the Elgin
pub, now we've returned with our feature.
The
Wake was screened at the extremely trendy Westborne
Studios (imagine Shoreditch under one roof and you've
got the idea) on the 19th August 2006. This was the penultimate
day of the festival and we we're chuffed to be showing
in the main venue and as part of the closing weekend.
Portobello screens mainly shorts so I was worried that
people might not want to sit through a feature, but I
was wrong. These are hardcore movie fans, eager to see
all that is new in the exciting world of film in London. |

PT
checks out other films while drinking a coke -
lightweight! |
|

Kathy
also checks the listings, while drinking a pint!
She remembers nothing about the rest of the festival. |
|
The
film was shown to a 100 strong audience and was received
well. It was great to screen The Wake to a
completely new audience, people that don't know us and
don't have to like it. It played great - people laughed
at the jokes and we're hooked on the story and characters
- you can't ask for more than that.
The
Portobello Film Festival is one of EHP's faves - it's
a great chance to show your work no matter what stage
of development. Last time we showed a trailer, so it
was great to come back with a completed work. The audience
is key to any creative process and the festival gives
filmmakers an opportunity to see how people react to
their films.
We'll
be back to Portobello soon with our next project.

Myself
and PT are here. It's the beginning of April and we
are screening The Wake at the European Film
College (EFC) in Denmark. We are picked up from the
tiny airport in Aarhus by an overexcited Eugen. All
of our crew from The Wake attended the EFC
and they have invited us over to show the film to this
years students.
We
are driven up into the hills, along forest lined roads
until we pull into what can only be described as a filmmakers
retreat. A huge grey building greets us surrounded by,
what we later find out to be, student digs and lecturers
flats. Eugen gives us a whistle stop tour of the college
and it's an amazing place. The main building has two
cinemas Big Bear (where The Wake is showing)
and Little Bear, a huge dinning hall, loads of edit
suites, a sound studio, a film library and a sound stage.
Basically everything you need to make a film. |

"...and
in this picture I am wearing womens stockings." |
|
Eugen
then takes us up to the Teachers Assistant flats where
he is staying. After completing their year at EFC some
students are invited back to spend a further year at
the college as TA's. Eugen says he was invited to stay
on, but I suspect he just wouldn't leave - camped out
on the grounds and refused to be moved.
We
met the TA's and some old students Eugen had invited
along to see the film. We all bonded over video clips
from the internet - there's nothing like a clip of a
talking cat to bring people together. |
|
| Now
here's a strange thing that we never did at university,
at the EFC they all cook for each other, and I mean everyone.
They take turns to cook for the rest of the college, now
it's only small, but that is still over a hundred people
and we're talking breakfast, lunch and dinner. PT and
I ate very well, but it was made clear to us when we arrived
if you were a vegetarian you didn't have much choice.
Denmark loves its meat! |
The
next day, the Saturday, was the screening. They have
a 500 seater cinema that the students can use at anytime,
which Eugen often did to watch his DVD collection on
the big screen. We had a great turnout and the film
when down really well - then after was the Q&A session.
Now,
I'm always nervous of these kind of things before hand
but once I'm there boring people about film and filmmaking
I could go on for hours. And we did. PT, Eugen and me
held court for over an hour and a half talking about
our experiences making the film. |
Sold
out screening after sold out screening! |
|
| In
the evening we partied! It's only been six years since
PT and I graduated from university so we keep up with
the young people and showed them how to kick it old skool.
Drunken rounds of the a movie game, followed by dancing
and drinking and some people passing out. Now, I'm a soft
drinks man so I was able to report the events of the evening
to everyone when they finally stirred for breakfast in
the late afternoon the next day. |
|

The
wild gang paint the town beige. |
|
Our
last day was spent sampling the delights of Aarhus and
the towns cobbled streets and slanting houses. It had
the feeling of a small english village and the people
were friendly, but no sign of a pastry any where.
The
whole experience was amazing and PT and I felt that
over the weekend we made some firm friends and hopefully
made an impression on some up and coming filmmakers.
Even if that only impression was to never play us at
the movie game again. PT and I kicked their collective
arses!

THE
WAKE PREMIERE! TALLY HO! |

Yes,
they went to Spec Savers. Paul Williams with EHP
uber-fan Wenzie Ng |
|
What
a night! There was glamour! There was backless dresses!
There was nervous sweat dripping off the directors brow!
Oh, and the screening of two years hard work!
The
cast and crew, friends and family turned out all glammed
up and ready for a red carpet affair and they got it
- apart from the red carpet, it was more blue. Eugen
Gritschneder and Johanna Thalmann flew in for Europe
and people from across this land we call England converged
on the impressive Imax Cinema in the Science Museum
to see the fruits of many peoples labours. |
PW:
...and the barman said "bloody hell, a
talking horse!" |
|
|
As
the cinema darkened the audience was treated to a very,
very early teaser trailer for EHP's next film. 'What
was it?' I hear you ask. Well, you should have been
there to find out. But lots more info about this film
will be gracing the site very soon.
After
the trailer the nervous writer/director, dressed in
a striking velvet number, took to the microphone to
deliver a unrehearsed speech. It wasn't as bad as Halle
Berry's oscar acceptance speech, but it wasn't far off.
After which the lights dimmed once again and The
Wake rolled...
And
the reaction?
Here
are a few comments: |
“Just
wanted to say - wow! Can't believe what you achieved.
I honestly enjoyed the film to bits and brought my friend
Laverne and my the noises she was making sitting next
to me! She really enjoyed it too - and am not just saying
that because you're a friend. We talked about it afterwards
and both said we loved the humour in it, the way the story
progressed and fitted together and we loved the intercutting
bits - those were our favourites. And of course, the heart
of the story was really touching too. We really, really
loved the soundtrack. I can't believe you did all of that
with no budget.”
Jessica Puvirajah |
“Just
wanted to say a proper congratulations for The Wake.
I thoroughly enjoyed it. Great performances, funny script,
sharp editing, beautiful girls, and a man with a bin on
his head. What more could you ask for?”
Nik Jones |
“I
thought the film was fantastic, very funny and poignant,
superb performances, a really interesting story with qualities
that made the characters seem legendary/epic but still
entirely human. All the characters were scripted and portrayed
in a very loving way. The music was superb, perfect every
time, camera work and the editing was extremely professional.
Loved the way the scenes changed between colour and B&W
and the static of the jumps, very creative.”
Ben Dell |
“Really
impressive first feature.”
